FALL, 2001

MGMT 750/CHEM 750/MSCI 750 (F) MANAGEMENT FOR SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS (3 credits).

This course is designed for science and engineering students who want to understand the management of new and/or small technology based businesses. The course is team taught to give students insights into how technology oriented firms manage intellectual property, marketing, organization behavior, strategy, accounting and finance.
 
The concepts covered will be particularly relevant to students who are interested in careers in technology or entrepreneurial ventures. This course is part of a two-class sequence and provides the foundation for students taking "New Venture Creation for Science and Engineering" which is offered in the spring.
 
The course will be held in Butcher Hall, Room 180, Tuesday and Thursday, 5:00PM to 6:20 PM.
Prerequisites: Junior, Senior, and Graduate Students (except MBA students)

LEADERSHIP AND BEHAVIOR MODULE
 
This module will introduce class members to the importance of leadership and behavioral skills to future success in the work place. It will use various readings to provide a substative base and case studies for actually building those skills. It will provide the basis for future development of these skills as well.

ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE MODULE
 
Accounting information is a vital input in the decision making process of managers, investors and creditors. This module focuses on the preparation and interpretation of the basic financial statements, and the computation of key ratios that are often used in evaluating the performance of companies and managers. The module also highlights the effects of managerial decisions on financial reports and financial ratios.

In this module we will review the various types of intellectual property and discuss the relative advantages and disadvantages of each type.

This module is about the issues and challenges in running a firm in a competitive environment from the perspective of the general manager. Strategic management is focused on formulating and implementing the major goals of the firm in relation to changing competitive environmental conditions, firm resources, and individuals' motives and values.
