This course is for science and engineering students who want to understand the management of new and/or small technology based businesses. The concepts covered will be particularly relevant to students who are interested in careers in technology or entrepreneurial ventures. This course is part of a two class sequence and provides the foundation for students taking "New Venture Creation for Science and Engineering" which is offered in the spring.

 
The course is team taught to provide insight into how technology oriented firms manage intellectual property, marketing, organization behavior, strategy, organization theory, accounting and finance. A variety of methods will be used to explain the theories and practices of management, including, class lectures, case discussions, and experiential exercises. The major topics include:

Grading Criteria

The grade for the course will be a function of performance in the individual modules. The module scores will contribute to the final grade as follows:

Organization Behavior 35%
Accounting / Finance 25%
Strategic Management 40%
Intellectual Property C/NC

Course Policies:

Classroom attendance is required. Students who miss class sessions will have points deducted from their final participation grades. Students who miss class sessions for "legitimate" reasons can avoid having points deducted from their final participation grade by informing the module instructor of the reason for the absence (no later than the day of the absence).

Any student with a documented disability needing academic adjustments or accommodations is requested to speak with Professor Maranville during the first two weeks of class. All discussions will remain confidential. Students with disabilities should also contact Disabled Student Services in the Ley Student Center.

During the first class session you will be asked to complete a description of your background and the nature of your management interests (last page of this outline). You will be also asked to summarize this orally in the first class. In addition please bring a copy of your current resume to the second class.
